What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a desirable alternative to other methods of replacing missing teeth. A dental implant itself is a titanium-based cylinder that replaces the missing tooth root. Implants can also be used to support full or partial dentures, dramatically improving denture retention, function, and stability.

At Irvine Implant & Restorative Dentistry, we always have excellent success rates for dental implants. With the advancement of dental technology and Dr. Shaygan’s experience, we have many options that treat and replace lost teeth. With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last patients for decades to a lifetime, all while looking and feeling just like a natural tooth.

The Benefits Of Dental Implants

Dental implants have many benefits over other types of tooth replacement methods, which makes them a highly popular option for patients of all ages. Implants allow you benefits that include:

  • Look and feel like a natural part of your smile (every one is custom-made)
  • Are long lasting (many patients see them last a lifetime)
  • Improve dental health
  • Can be brushed and cared for just like your regular teeth
  • Allow you to eat the foods you love without worry or discomfort
  • Prevent your jaw from losing bone mass (which can affect health and appearance)

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

Before we begin, we will need to evaluate your case and determine if you are a potential candidate for dental implants. In order to qualify for specific implants, we consider structure, damage, Bone mass, and overall oral health. Typically this is conducted with an x-ray, and CT scan is performed to determine if you have enough bone to place the implant and to verify the size and kind of implant that should be placed.

Do I Need a Bone Graft?

We would like to note that patients with adequate bone mass can receive implants, although this varies among individuals. If you do not have enough bone mass, don’t worry. Usually, a simple procedure called bone grafting will be enough to help you build back enough bone mass to support implants.

After we have fully determined that you are a suitable candidate for dental implants, we will begin the process. In order to fully complete the implant process, our team will fill the area, shape your new implant, and ultimately complete it with a newly designed cap for your tooth.

Choosing Your Tooth Replacement Solution

Replacing lost teeth can be an important step forward for most patients, but it can also be intimidating. That is why we always work closely with our patients to help them through every aspect of the process. We will go over all the benefits and factors involved in choosing the right tooth replacement option for you. If you have any questions along the way, don’t hesitate to ask the team at Irvine Implant & Restorative Dentistry. We are always happy to provide additional answers or information to ensure you are never in the dark about any aspect of your treatment.

How Do I Get Dental Implants?

The dental implant process can be completed in as little as two visits involving a total of three steps. Some patients may first require a bone grafting procedure, however, if they do not have enough jawbone mass to support the implant. This would be the first step, and after you have enough bone mass, you could proceed with the other three steps.

Placing the Post:

Once you have been determined to be a candidate for dental implants, we will begin the process of placing the titanium post. This is a minimally invasive procedure that typically requires only local anesthesia. After the post has been placed, we will allow it to fuse with your natural bone, which takes about 3-6 months.

Placing the Abutment:

After your dental implants have had time to properly fuse with your jawbone, we will move on to the next step in the dental implant process: placing the abutment. The abutment is what will support and connect your new tooth (or teeth) to the dental implant post. Once again, this is a minimally invasive procedure that is completed in our office.

Placing the Crown:

Finally, we will design and place your new tooth (or teeth) on top of the dental implant abutment. This can be a single dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your particular needs and smile goals. If you are ready to get your smile back to its former glory, get in touch with us today to learn more and start your personalized process.

How Long Will My Dental Implants Last?

One of the key reasons so many patients choose dental implants as the means to restore their smile is because of how durable implants are. Modern manufacturing techniques ensure that every material for your dental implant is built to last. While implants are not invulnerable, they can last decades to a lifetime when cared for properly. BY keeping your teeth clean and practicing healthy oral hygiene habits, patients can see years of benefits from their dental implants.
